Rating tools
Green Star is the South African gold standard when it comes to sustainable buildings and places. Discover the versatility of the Green Star rating system, offering tools tailored to various building types and development scales, from interior fit-outs to expansive urban precincts and from existing structures to greenfield projects. Green Star supports sustainability across your project’s lifecycle, from initial designs and community development plans to construction and daily operations.
GBCSA Net Zero/Net Positive can be applied to new construction projects, fit out projects and existing buildings in operation.
Net Zero/Net Positive Certification will award projects which go beyond the partial reductions recognised in the current GBCSA tools, and have taken the initiative to reach the endpoint of completely neutralising or positively redressing their impacts.
GBCSA proudly offers EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) certification, a green building design tool, certification system, and global standard developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a World Bank Group member. EDGE-certified projects reduce carbon emissions, save water, and lower living costs for occupants. We certify EDGE projects throughout Africa.
Green Star in Africa
GBCSA can certify throughout Africa with Green Star, supporting emerging Green Building Councils across the continent. It serves as a significant touchstone for green building initiatives in Africa, promoting sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
The Green Star rating system is adapted and customised to meet the certification needs of individual African countries through this collaboration. It offers a framework for evaluating the sustainability and environmental impact of building projects across the continent. To ensure relevance, each country develops a Green Star Local Context Report, which outlines the unique climatic and environmental conditions within its borders.
