Role Summary
The Technical Manager plays a pivotal role in leading the development, enhancement, and strategic direction of GBCSAās certification tools, training products, and technical research initiatives. This role is responsible for managing major strategic technical projects, overseeing product development and maintenance, and providing expert responses to complex technical queries. As a key support to the Head of Technical and CEO, the Technical Manager also represents GBCSA in industry forums and stakeholder engagements.
This is a strategic and operational leadership role within the GBCSA Technical Team. This position is primarily responsible for overseeing the technical development, implementation, and continuous improvement of GBCSAās suite of Green Star, Net Zero, EWP and EDGE certification tools. The role ensures the integrity and quality of technical support, leads major technical and research projects, and contributes to the organisationās thought leadership and industry advocacy.
This role is one of two Senior Manager positions within the Technical Team. While this role focuses on product development and tools, the second Manager oversees operational management and manages the certification process and technical coordinators.
Responsibilities
Product Development & Management
- Lead the development of new certification tools and training products aligned with GBCSAās strategic goals.
- Oversee upgrades and ongoing maintenance of existing tools and products to ensure relevance and technical robustness.
- Ensure tools are user-friendly, technically sound, and aligned with local and international best practices.
Strategic Technical Projects
- Manage and deliver major technical projects that support market transformation and innovation in the built environment.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to scope, plan, and execute strategic initiatives.
Technical Leadership & Support
- Act as the lead technical specialist across all GBCSA tools, providing expert guidance and resolution to complex queries.
- Coordinate with internal teams and external experts to ensure timely and accurate responses to technical inquiries.
- Support the Head of Technical and CEO in representing GBCSA in technical forums, industry engagements, and stakeholder consultations.
Research & Innovation
- Lead and oversee research projects that inform the evolution of GBCSAās tools and contribute to industry knowledge.
- Translate research findings into actionable insights and product innovations.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
- Manage and mentor the technical specialists, ensuring alignment with digital transformation goals and internal process improvements.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture within the technical team.
Requirements
- Tertiary qualification in engineering, property related or environmental science, sustainable development or similar field e.g. architecture / engineering / quantity surveying / project management / environmental science qualification / facilities management. Engineering background is beneficial.
- Industry experience of at least more than 8 years within the built environment.
- Experience as a Green Star Accredited Professional (AP) and/or Edge Expert on successful certified or registered projects is beneficial.
- Experience in sustainability or ESG consulting with exposure to global frameworks is beneficial.
- Experience in quality and project management is beneficial.
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems and deliver on sustainability solutions is essential.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent writing skills, and an ability to explain technical issues clearly and concisely in lay personās terms.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple team members and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work as a reliable participant of a team.
- Proven ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and lead cross-functional teams to deliver strategic projects.
- Skilled in Microsoft Excel, PPT & Word.
- Strong passion for the green agenda, offering ideas and solutions to drive market transformation in the South African property sector.
