Role Summary

The Management Accountant is responsible for providing accurate financial information, analysis and insights to support strategic and operational decision making. The role focuses on budgeting, forecasting, management reporting and financial performance monitoring.

Responsibilities

  • Leading the month end process to ensure the timely submission of accurate monthly management accounts.
  • Prepare and present monthly management accounts.
  • Ensuring effective cashflow management.
  • Knowledge of IFRS, and a very good understanding of IFRS 15 and 16 as well as IAS 16 and 38.
  • Prepare annual budgets and periodic forecasts.
  • Develop financial models to support business decisions.
  • Facilitate the external audit process, including the preparation of audit file and serving as the primary liaison with the auditors.
  • Ensuring compliance with financial policies, procedures and internal controls.
  • Supervise the Finance Officers.
  • Collaborating closely with departments to provide financial guidance and support on finance‑related matters.
  • Support the CFO with Board reports.
  • Managing all statutory returns.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance or related field.
  • Completed or progression towards Honours/Post-graduate qualification advantageous.
  • 3 years articles experience or 5-year experience in an accounting role.
  • Advance Excel and Proficiency in Financial Systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Phil Barttram

Chair

An independent consultant, Phil Barttram, is a self-proclaimed real estate evangelist, hailing the role of real estate within multi-asset class portfolios and the benefits of improved transparency across the sector. Phil has an MBA from UCT’s Graduate School of Business, complemented by over 26 years in financial services in London and SA. Phil’s previous role as an Executive Director, at MSCI, enabled him to work with investors across Africa and the Middle East, providing him with a unique perspective of Real Estate investment strategy and portfolio optimisation.

Phil is a recognised authority on South African Real Estate with a record of profiling innovative concepts and analysis at national and international conferences and through the media.

Engel Binedell

Engelbert Binedell is the Chief Operating Officer for South Africa at Growthpoint Properties, South Africa’s largest real estate investment trust, and a Director on the Board of the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA). He brings 30 years of experience across property asset management, operations, leasing and development, with deep expertise in large-scale portfolio performance and sustainable real estate practices.

At Growthpoint, Engelbert oversees the Group’s South African operations across a national portfolio, leading a team of more than 600 employees spanning property and facilities management, procurement, legal and technology. He plays a central role in shaping operational strategy, with a strong focus on efficiency, digital enablement and long-term asset performance, while advancing key elements of Growthpoint’s ESG agenda, including green building certification, renewable energy integration and utilities optimisation.

He began his career in education, earning a BA (Ed), before transitioning into financial services at Investec Private Bank and later Investec Property Group, where he led property syndication and risk management functions while completing his Master of Business Leadership. Following Growthpoint’s acquisition of Metboard Properties, he progressed through multiple senior roles, including Sector Head, Regional Asset Manager and Fund Director, before being appointed COO.

AndrƩ Theys

Immediate Past Chair

AndrĆ© Theys is the Executive Manager of Operations for the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, one of South Africa’s most iconic and visited destinations. AndrĆ© joined V&A Waterfront Holdings (Pty) Ltd in June 2017 and is responsible for all operations including technical infrastructure, utilities, physical plant, hard and soft facilities management, by way of example, cleaning and hygiene, security and safeguarding, waste management, landscaping, parking and so forth. With more than 24 years of work experience, spanning engineering and building maintenance, services design, new build infrastructure and contracting developed in industrial contracting, institutional facilities management and corporate real estate he has a keen sense of multi-stakeholder environments.

Before the V&A Waterfront, AndrƩ spent 16 years with the University of Cape Town and was the Executive Director of Properties and Services, responsible for the 600,000 square meter UCT property portfolio. He joined UCT in 2001 as a Project Engineer, then promoted to Head of Engineering Services before being appointed Executive Director.

Before UCT, he was employed at Eskom’s Peaking Generation division and at Luwa (South Africa), formerly a Swiss industrial engineering group, now ACTOM HVAC. AndrĆ© holds professional memberships with the Institution of Certificated Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, South Africa (ICMEESA), the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE), the Institute of Professional Engineering Technologists (IPET) and the South African Institute of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (SAIRAC).

AndrƩ is a certified engineer, registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa and holds a National Higher Diploma and Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from UCT.

Anelisa Keke

Anelisa Keke

Ā A highly regarded senior professional in both the Reward and Sustainability disciplines, Anelisa’s executive experience within a listed company gives her a wider perspective on the myriad issues that corporate South Africa faces today. Her skills span across Sustainability, Reward and Tax, having worked as a consultant as well as a Chief Sustainability Officer for a large REIT. She was the editor of a major thought leadership publication at a global professional services firm and has spoken at multiple conferences and seminars. Anelisa is an admitted attorney and has an LLB and MComm in Tax, both from UCT.Ā  Ā Anelisa’s hobbies include art, reading and writing

Brian

Brian Unsted

Brian holds the title Lead Specialist Sustainability: Insurance and Asset Management (IAM) business unit of Standard Bank of South Africa.

Brian has 10 years of experience in the South African environmental sustainability industry, with a majority of experience in the built environment.

He is responsible for governance, sustainability reporting, (including CRFD, Report to society, Integrated reporting), data management, sustainable finance targets support and alignment with the Standard Bank groups sustainability goals, targets and reporting.

He is a Director of the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) and previous Chair of the organization.

Prior work experience has been in the real estate industry in various roles for over 30 years, including asset management, property development and finance.Ā 

He holds an MBA, B-Com and PDM qualifications.

Georgina

Georgina Smit

Chief Executive Officer

Georgina Smit is an award-winning leader and driving force in sustainable design and green building innovation. She served as Head of Technical at GBCSA for five years before assuming the CEO role in May 2026. Georgina directs GBCSA’s strategic mandate to mobilise industry leaders, government partners, and the property sector toward a net‑zero future.Ā 

Her passion for collaboration, technical excellence, and market transformation, guides her to advance the council’s mission to scale sustainable building solutions, embed best practice, and foster a culture of environmental responsibility across South Africa’s built environment.Ā 

Georgina holds two Master’s degrees, and joined GBCSA after nearly ten years of consultancy at Arup where she contributed to multidisciplinary projects focused on resilient design and low‑carbon innovation.

Ilse Swanepoel

Non-Executive Director

Ilse Swanepoel is an environmental sustainability specialist with 16 years of experience in the utilities industry and holds a Bachelor of Information Sciences (BIS) Honours degree from the University of Pretoria. Ilse joined Remote Metering Solutions (ā€œRMSā€) in July 2021 as Business Quality Lead, charged with end-to-end management of business quality throughout RMS’s product and service offering.

Before joining RMS, Ilse led the development and implementation of Redefine Properties’ environmental sustainability strategy appointed as Head of Utilities. Ilse’s operational expertise includes the deployment of renewable energy, energy and water measurement and efficiency solutions in the commercial property market. At Redefine she spearheaded several key projects including the deployment of more than 25 MWp of rooftop solar PV installations, Green Star certification of 82 existing office buildings and the deployment of more than 5,000 smart metering points.

Ilse’s passion for green buildings is evident in her holistic approach to integrated building management to ensure their environmental sustainability. She is constantly pursuing solutions to improve the measurement of key sustainability metrics and integrating data inputs to provide intelligence to increase the operational efficiency of property portfolios.

Joanne Solomon

Joanne is an experienced marketer, having spent more than twenty years in a progression of senior and executive roles. Prior to joining SA REIT, she held the position of Head of Brand and Client Insights at Nedbank Corporate and Investment Banking (NCIB), and before this she served as the Head of Marketing for Nedbank Corporate Property Finance. She holds a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Stellenbosch and has attended the Harvard Business School Strategic Marketing Management Programme.

Kevin James

Kevin is an eco-entrepreneur focused 100% on unlocking green economy opportunities. He is also a sustainability professional with deep experience in strategic corporate sustainability as well as in the development of green, low-carbon projects.

In 2006 he founded his most current entrepreneurial venture – Global Carbon Exchange (GCX) with two goals in mind: to create commercial value and to make a positive impact at the same time.

Kevin is currently the CEO of GCX, a strategic environmental sustainability and project development company that supports the transformation of large, complex organisations across SA into more responsible and valuable entities through the design and implementation of sustainable business programs.

Besides his role at GCX and The Green Building Council South Africa, Kevin is also a Director of OptimusBio a leading, homegrown biotech company developing biological solutions across various fields.

Levinia Palmer

Levinia Palmer

Chief Financial Officer

Levinia Palmer joined GBCSA in 2013 as a Junior Accountant and progressed into a Management Accountant role. In 2018, she briefly stepped away from the organisation before returning in 2019, continuing her growth within the finance function.

In 2021, she was promoted to Financial Manager, and in 2023, she was appointed CFO, recognising her strong performance, leadership, and commitment to the organisation.

With over 20 years of experience in financial and management accounting, Levinia brings a wealth of expertise, including a solid background in the built environment gained through her work with property management companies. She holds a BCom specialising in Financial Management from Unisa and is currently pursuing her CIMA professional qualification.

As CFO, Levinia leads the Finance and Operations department, playing a key role in strengthening governance, ensuring financial sustainability, and enabling strategic decision-making at GBCSA. She is deeply committed to advancing the organisation’s mission of creating a built environment that benefits both people and the planet.

Manfred Braune

Non-Executive Director

Manfred currently holds the position of Director of Environmental Sustainability at the University of Cape Town (UCT). In this newly established directorate at UCT, he leads the strategy and implementation of environmental sustainability across all spheres of the university including operations, teaching, research, engagementĀ and governance, since early 2019.

Manfred’s background is as a professional electrical engineer, having worked at WSP Group for over 10 years designing and project managing the delivery of various large design and construction projects, where he also started and led WSP’s green building business for 3 years. After this Manfred worked at the Green Building Council South Africa for just under 10 years, directing all technical and training-related matters, as well as being an executive director on the board.

Manfred has spoken at various local and international conferences, in South Africa and the US. Manfred has also been involved extensively in supporting other green building councils across the African continent to assist them in establishing their green building initiatives. Manfred is well connected in the property and green building industry both locally and globally, where he has engaged extensively with senior staff and leading industry stakeholders of various leading organisations in this sector.

Shameela Ebrahim

Non-Executive Director

Shameela is the Chief Sustainability Officer at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. She joined the JSE in 2007.

Passionate about the systemic importance of sustainability thinking in corporate strategy, she is responsible for advising the Executive Committee and Board of the JSE Limited on sustainability and its integration into strategy. She is the immediate past chair of the World Federation of Exchange’s (global) Sustainability Working Group and a member of the Strategy Group of the Global Investors for Sustainable Development Alliance (GISD).

Her responsibilities for Sustainability at the JSE include the FTSE JSE Responsible Investment Index series. She represents the JSE on various industry advisory panels[1] locally and globally related to sustainability, responsible investing and climate change. As a sustainability specialist, she has, inter alia, been a key contributor to the JSE’s work into climate change, the potential for a local market to trade in carbon credits and environment-related products, the development of a Green, Social and Sustainability bonds framework, impact investing, the JSE’s sustainability, innovation and CSI strategies as well as the annual sustainability investor briefing sessions. She is a trustee of the WWF (South Africa) and served on the board of Directors as a non-executive director. She is the board chairperson of Ubuntu Wilderness and a non-executive director of the Green Building Council of South Africa.

Her previous experience includes senior roles in the banking and insurance industries, and she was the JSE’s senior manager of strategy prior to assuming responsibility for the Sustainability portfolio.

Steve Brookes

Non-Executive Director

Steve holds a National Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering and is the founder and current Chief Executive of Balwin Properties, with over 22 years of experience in the position at the company. Balwin is the JSE’s only national large-scale developer of turnkey sectional-title apartments and surrounding infrastructure aimed at the mid-to-upper market segment.

Prior to founding Balwin in 1996, Steve spent four years as a civil engineer at Eskom and three years as a project manager at Matrix Projects.

He is also the chairman of the Balwin Foundation, a non-profit company established in 2016 by Balwin Properties and aimed at making a social difference in the education, training and funding landscape. The foundation provides scholarships, bursaries, awards and loans for study, research and teaching in areas relevant to Balwin’s business model to ensure the development of a future generation of skilled practitioners.

Steve is passionate about environmentally responsible building practices and is the driving force behind Balwin’s approach to minimising its environmental impact by achieving green building ratings at its developments, including 6-Star Green Star ratings from the GBCSA for its lifestyle centres and net zero certification.

Mokena Makeka

Non-Executive Director

Raised in Maseru, Lesotho and New York, USA, Mokena Makeka is an accomplished architect, artist, creative, curator, designer, global leader, scholar, speaker, urbanist and visionary. He holds a B.Arch Dist. Hons, University of Cape Town (UCT), and various executive leadership qualifications, from the Harvard Kennedy School, Oxford University, Wits University and others.

He is the owner of architectural practice, MDL Workshop cc trading as DESIGNWORKS, and is an adjunct professor at Cooper Union, New York and at Carleton University, Canada.

Through DESIGNWORKS he offers high-quality design and strategic insight work, innovative design solutions across urban, architectural, cultural and installation scale as well as nurturing talent and providing mentorship to various creatives and disciplines.

Mokena has extensive experience in leading, founding and serving on boards and some of these roles include the South African Heritage Agency, the Cultural and Creative Industries Federation of South Africa, Cape Town Heritage Trust, the Isandla Institute (Ex-Chairman of the board) and Bush Radio Station. (ex-Chairman of the board), Cape Africa Platform (ex-chairman of the board)

Mokena is a founding member of CCIFSA and served on the World Cup Arts and Culture Committee for South Africa. He is currently the chairman and founding member of the board of the School for Explorative Architecture and is on the board of the Green Building Council 2020.

Michele Bekkens

Michele currently heads up the Commercial Real Estate Finance division of Sanlam Life Insurance Limited. As a qualified CA(SA) with an H.Dip Tax, she has had extensive funding experience in the real estate sector, both from a debt as well as an equity perspective. She has long-standing relationships with both listed and unlisted stakeholders within the real estate sector as well as maintaining relationships with providers of funding. She is passionate about elevating the importance of non-financial considerations when making investment decisions.

Mfundo Xulu Ka Dlamini

Non-Executive Director

Mr Mfundo Xulu Ka Dlamini is a Real Estate professional, having completed studies at the University of Johannesburg, and is currently pursuing a Master of Science (MSc) qualification in Management of Technology and Innovation (MOTi) with the Da Vinci Institute for Technology Management. He was in a class of pioneers at the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute (TMALI) and holds two qualifications – Thought Leadership for Africa’s Renewal and Africa & international trade – Building an Africa Developmental State.

Leadership roles include being Chairperson for the National/ Provincial Green Building Technical Task Team and Chairperson of the Green Building Council’s Public Sector Committee, a role he assumed in 2017.
Mfundo has been the driving force in establishing the Green Building Unit, commencing with the development of the National Green Building Framework which was adopted at COP17 and the subsequent Green Building Policy.

Dr. Gavin Kode

Non-Executive Director

Gavin is the Deputy Director-General: of Provincial Public Works, Western Cape Government (WCG) Department of Infrastructure. Following initial business and law undergraduate studies and being admitted as an attorney, Gavin specialised in tax law and gained significant experience in asset-based structured financing, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, project finance and private equity in the investment banking arena. In 2013 he moved from Old Mutual Property to work by choice as a public sector property professional. Gavin made this choice largely because he sees vast opportunities in public sector property portfolios for creating growth and jobs and enabling a resilient, sustainable, high-quality and inclusive working environment. In 2014 he was admitted as an advocate and appointed Deputy Director-General: of Provincial Public Works.

He continues to drive private sector property asset management principles and practices in Public Works, with a specific focus on sustainability. Gavin has been the key driver behind the annual publication of the WCG Property Efficiency Report (PER) and has been an influential force in manipulating the levers at the WCG’s disposal that have a net positive effect on the space, cost and environmental parameters that are reported in the PER. This report is a clear demonstration of the WCG’s commitment to managing and improving the efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of its property holdings. The eleventh annual PER was published in December 2022, and it continues to be the only report of its kind to be produced by an administrative arm of the state in South Africa.

Gavin personally participated for many years in the development of the Public Works Green Building Policy that was launched at the GBCSA Convention in 2018. In its capacity as custodian and manager of the WCG’s immovable asset portfolio, Provincial Public Works actively promotes the use of renewable energy in public buildings and the property portfolio now boasts an installed rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity producing 3 888 MWh per annum on 17 buildings, saving an estimated R3.6 m per year. A remote metering project that commenced in 2014 with a pilot of one building and 60 meters has been expanded under Gavin’s direction to 49 buildings with a total of 792 remote time-of-use consumption measuring electricity (627), water (123), PV (34), and pressure (8).

Gavin was recently awarded a PhD in Environmental and Water Sciences from the University of the Western Cape. He also holds a Masters degree in tax law and an MBA from the University of the Witwatersrand, has been a GBCSA Accredited Professional for New Buildings since 2014 and for Net Zero since 2022, and has been a member of the GBCSA Public Sector board sub-committee since April 2017. He joined the GBCSA main board in July 2020.

Anthony Stroebel

Anthony Stroebel is a seasoned brand builder renowned for his fervent dedication to crafting luxury and ethical brands driven by purpose. With a profound belief in the transformative power of brands to enrich societies and foster meaningful connections within communities, Anthony champions a vision where creativity and innovation serve as catalysts for both emotional engagement and strategic success.

Throughout his illustrious career, Anthony has held pivotal roles as Executive Board Director and C-Suite marketing leader across diverse industries. From steering global communications and advertising agencies, including the prestigious JWT Group office in Cape Town, to spearheading marketing endeavours for South Africa’s foremost luxury real estate conglomerate, Anthony’s expertise spans Business and Marketing Planning, Corporate and Consumer Brand Strategy, Omni-channel Campaign Management, Internal Communication, Culture, and Event Management.

An advocate for cultivating inspired internal cultures as the bedrock of competitive distinction, Anthony emphasises the intrinsic connection between organisational ethos and brand promise. His unwavering commitment to driving value through purpose-driven initiatives underscores his belief in brands as agents of positive change in society.

Lisa Reynolds

Chief Executive Officer & Executive Director

Lisa Reynolds is the CEO of the Green Building Council South Africa.

Lisa was the driver for the drafting of Energy Efficiency Standards and Regulations for Buildings and has been involved in Energy Efficiency since 2003. She serves on many committees in the SABS and within the energy management professionals’ space. She was President of the SAEEC from 2016 to 2019 and was the previous President of the ESCo (Energy Services Companies) Association. Lisa was instrumental in the formation of SAFEE (Southern African Females in Energy Efficiency) within SAEEC.

She has assisted the South African Government with its Green Building Framework policies, Energy Efficiency Tax Incentives and Energy Efficiency Strategies

Her passion for the ā€œGreen spaceā€ started with the birth of the Green Building Council in 2007. Lisa served on the Board and the Technical Committee of the GBCSA, as well as on several Technical Working Groups for Rating Tools and Criteria. Lisa. became CEO in June 2020.

Lisa has a BSc, an MBA and a CEM. Lisa’s awards include the 2007 ETA Award for Women, 2008 Individual Energy (SAEE), 2012 SABS Standards Writer Award; the 2014 Women in Energy (SAWIEN); and the 2016 Ian Lane Hall of Fame award.
