Green Star in Africa

Supporting green building projects throughout Africa with Green Star

GBCSA can certify throughout Africa with Green Star, supporting emerging Green Building Councils across the continent. It serves as a significant touchstone for green building initiatives in Africa, promoting sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.

What is Green Star in Africa

The Green Star rating system is adapted and customised to meet the certification needs of individual African countries through this collaboration. It offers a framework for evaluating the sustainability and environmental impact of building projects across the continent. To ensure relevance, each country develops a Green Star Local Context Report, which outlines the unique climatic and environmental conditions within its borders.

How does Green Star in Africa work

Projects seeking Green Star certification in Africa must register based on the specific Green Star Local Context Report applicable to their country. These reports provide essential insights into local factors, such as climate and regional conditions, which influence the customisation of the Green Star tool for that region. Each country develops a Local Context Report in conjunction with the project AP which is then reviewed by GBCSA.. Once approved, this allows for projects within that country to be certified using the relevant Green Star SA tool, with some adaptations identified in the Local Context Report. By considering these localised factors, the certification process becomes more effective in addressing the distinct sustainability challenges and opportunities present in different African nations. This tailored approach ensures that sustainability standards are appropriately applied, fostering the adoption of green building practices throughout the continent.

Green Star Local Context Reports are available in the GBCSA Library section.

Where no report exists yet, we are able to work with that country’s Green Building Council to produce one. Reach out to us to start the process.Ā  Local Context Reports do not incur additional GBCSA fees for approval.
