The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) is a network of national green building councils in more than 92 countries, making it the world’s largest international organisation influencing the green building marketplace. The Green Building Council of South Africa became the 13th full member council in 2008.
The mission of the WorldGBC is to strengthen green building councils in member countries by championing their leadership and connecting them to a network of knowledge, inspiration and practical support.
Established in 2002, the WorldGBC works with member councils to promote local green building actions and address global issues such as climate change. Green Building Councils are non-profit, member-based organisations that partner with industry and government in the transformation of their building industries towards sustainability through the adoption of green building practices.
The WorldGBC also supports new and emerging Green Building Councils by providing them with the tools and strategies to establish strong organisations and leadership positions in their countries.
Taking the local global
Member councils contribute to the development and implementation of high performance green building principles, standards, rating and certification systems, performance measures, technologies, products, resources and projects. Green Building Councils create change in their local markets and bring the learning and innovations of their particular context to the global stage.
