The Green Star SA – Public & Education Building (PEB) PILOT rating tool assesses the environmental attributes of new or significantly refurbished public and education building developments. The tool assigns a Green Star SA rating to the building as a whole on the basis of design potential.
Development types within the scope of the Green Star SA – Public & Education Building PILOT include but are not limited to:
- Community Centres
- Library/Museum/Gallery Buildings
- Basic Education buildings (Schools)
- Higher Education Buildings
- Court Buildings
- Restaurants
- Indoor Sports/Leisure Centres
- Theatres/Cinemas/Music Halls
- Places of Worship
- Airport Terminal Buildings
- Public Transport Terminal Buildings
- Convention / Exhibition Centres

Two different certifications are awarded through the same tool: Green Star SA - Public & Education Building Design PILOT at the end of the design phase of the project and Green Star SA - Public & Education Building As Built PILOT following construction completion. The Green Star SA – Public & Education Building PILOT rating tool was released in October 2011 allowing for both public and industry comment prior to the release of the Green Star SA – Public & Education Building v1 rating tool.
The GBCSA encourages all stakeholders to review and submit feedback on the content of the Green Star SA – Public & Education Building PILOT rating tool. All feedback will inform the development of Green Star SA – Public & Education Building v1. Please submit your feedback to the GBCSA via greenstarsa-peb@gbcsa.org.za.
In addition, the GBCSA will work closely with a limited number of public and education building projects to further test the pilot version of the rating tool.
