The World Green Building Council is the coordinating body for national Green Building Councils. The Green Building Council of South Africa became the thirteenth full member Council of the World GBC in September 2008. The World GBC has the sole authority to appoint and direct the formation of the country Green Building Councils throughout the world. |

What is Green building |
The World Green Building Council was launched in 1998 by David Gottfried, founder of the US Green Building Council and its first President.The founding vision of the World Green Building Council is to provide a balanced and integrated global platform in which to collaborate and advance the work of the national green building council organisations. The World Green Building Council was officially launched in November 2002 by its nine founding Countries. The World Green Building Council is currently a federation of global Green Building Councils. The 13 member councils comprise Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and United States with 35 other countries, including Argentina, Chile, China, Colombia, Egypt, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Israel, Korea, Nigeria, Panama and the Philippines all in the process of forming green building councils . The individual green building councils support the development and implementation of high performance/green building principles, standards, rating and certification systems, performance measures, technologies, products, resources and projects. Green building councils are open, non-profit membership coalitions of the building industries diverse sectors. The Chair of the World Green Building Council is currently Tony Arnel.
